Overnight On Nicollet Lyrics

Must have been that winter cold
That made me set out on my own
I said my goodbyes and left You behind
Growing up is getting old

Bring back the memories
Bring back that smile because I've outgrown them
Now I remember but everything's changed
Still I'm captivated by that face You wear tonight

Must have been the April thaw
That made me hunger for Your arms
You welcomed me back and you held me close
Overnights don't seem so cold

Bring back the memories
Bring back that smile because I've outgrown them
Now I remember but everything's changed
Still I'm captivated by that face You wear tonight
Familiar but it looks so new in streetlight - in this light

Song Description:
"After dropping out of college in the freezing cold Minnesota winter of 2003, going into tremendous debt with nothing to show for it, and leaving my friends on campus to go work an overnight security job in downtown Minneapolis, I became disillusioned with many aspects of life. I slept for a maximum of 4 hours during the day, got sick often, saw the sun very little, and sorely missed the fun and fellowship of college friends. But more significantly, this was all happening at a major time of crisis in my faith life. God seemed very distant to me, and much of my picture of Him was being challenged by the world around me, and by my own aversion to a relationship with Him. I prayed very little, and read the word even less. This may have been the darkest point of my life. That spring, through much study of the word and various truths of God breaking through to my heart, I repented of my doubt and sin that kept me from God during those cold, winter months. It was at a desk on Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis that I wrote this song about recalling the faith of my youth, and how it had changed in light of a God that doesn't." - Justin Anderson (Mainstay)
