'As a worship songwriter I'm always keen to find new ways of celebrating the gospel in song. I stumbled across the phrase 'Beautiful News' one time when I was writing down some lyric thoughts, and immediately I thought it would make great song title and theme. In the end of course it ended being the name of the album too.
We live in a culture marked by bad news. You only need flick through the news channels for a few moments to be be faced with all kinds of negative or alarming news. The wonderful thing about the gospel of Jesus Christ is that it's an altogether different kind of message.It's 'beautiful news', refreshing to the soul and full hope, joy and peace. When writing this song I decided not simply to try and celebrate the gospel of Christ through the lyrics, but also to share it too. So in the bridge we sing out 'There's a God who came down to save, and He calls Your name.' It's the first time I've ever spoken directly to people in a song like that, but it felt like an appropriate thing to do.
I wrote this song whilst on tour in the USA with my friends Chris Tomlin and Louie Giglio. I'd had the phrase 'Beautiful News' buzzing around my head and heart for a while by then, and one night I came off stage after leading worship. and immediately the song started to flow out. I grabbed my guitar and computer and headed to the tour bus where the rest of the song poured out. I've learned in times like it's important to grab the moment. What better time to write a worship song than having been with the people of God, in the presence of God, pouring out the praises of God.
The funny part is I thought I'd only been on the bus 15 or 20 minutes or so, and knew I had to hurry back to join Louie and Chris for the rest of the evening. As it turned out I'd actually been an hour and a half, and missed the end! I was grateful to God for the song, and grovelling to Chris and Louie for having not made it back for the end of the night!' - Matt Redman
