Shaun Groves Album: Invitation to Eavesdrop Track: Two Cents
Two Cents Lyrics
Words and music by Shaun Groves
So proud to call you friend So let down you're starting up again The same old story a thousand times told With you the hapless damsel in distress
Am I richer than your King? Will my two cents get you anything?
Chorus: I'll give you prayers and my time Ev'ry moment of mine All I have is yours to spend But if you're hoping all your tears will dry With words that I dispense, well There're just some things that can't be bought with my Two cents Still I'm so glad you call me friend Just wond'ring when your pity parties end When will you stop this bringing invitations Wearing your same black party dress
Am I richer than your King? Will my two cents get you anything? (Chorus)
How can I have all your answers When I've got questions of my own?
(Chorus)
Story Behind The Song: I wrote this song during my time counseling students at the Methodist Children's Home in Waco , TX . A fifteen-year-old came to me with a problem I had no easy answers to. She was the product of years of abuse, shuffled from home to home and pregnant for the third time. She didn't know Jesus, she didn't know where to turn or what to do and I found myself with no easy answers for her hard questions. All I could do was commend her on wanting to keep the child, reassure her that I would be there to listen and pray and remind her that nothing can separate us from the love of God (Phillipians 4:6) . We talked, cried, and prayed together that day, and that night I began writing the song. "I'll give you prayers and my time / and every moment of mine / all I have is yours to spend / but if your hoping all your tears will dry with words that I dispense / They're just some things that can't be bought with my two cents."
